Liberia
Although Liberia’s 14-year civil war ended in 2003, women and girls continue to suffer myriad mental and physical problems associated with wartime sexual abuse. The on-going violence including sexual exploitation, child rape, domestic violence, and harmful traditional practices continue to hurt and disempower women and girls everyday. For the most part, perpetrators continue to rape and abuse women and girls with impunity.
With Irish Aid’s support, ChildFund Ireland began working with CCF Liberia in 2006, to help women and girls to overcome the effects of gender based violence, ultimately facilitating their reintegration into their communities by enabling their active participation. Using a comprehensive psychosocial approach, SAFE provides case management and community-based support to help heal the scars of GBV and safeguard against future incidents.
