Thailand

CCF Thailand has been helping needy children since 1959. Currently, about 34,000 children in 82 project locations are assisted, almost 250 of them by ChildFund Ireland sponsors. Thailand's population is mostly rural, however, the urban population is growing. Despite unfavourable agricultural conditions, including a semi-arid climate, poor soil and unpredictable rain, the labour force is largely devoted to agriculture, and rice is the most widely produced crop. Few people have the money to buy modern farm tools that would help increase their harvests. Even when families are able to harvest enough to sell, very little income is earned because of the high cost of transporting their produce to market.

Due to the lack of earning power, parents cannot meet their children's basic needs. Health care and education fall to the wayside. Poor living conditions, illness, disease and malnutrition are common, and educational opportunities are severely limited beyond secondary school. However, in CCF Thailand assisted project areas, children receive basic health services and required immunisations. Both children and their parents are eligible for medical services. In an effort to address the dietary needs of the community, parents take turns preparing nutritious meals with food that is donated by the project.

As in many countries, CCF Thailand works to ensure that home based care and training for people living with AIDS is provided. CCF offices in Thailand have implemented care and support programmes for children orphaned by AIDS. A new programme through "Rejoice Urban Development Project," initiated by CCF Thailand, responds to the special needs of AIDS affected children by reaching families who need basic health care and educational assistance.

Thankfully none of the project areas were affected by the tsunami and all ChildFund supported activities have been able to continue largely as normal.
