Zambia

CCF Zambia has been helping children and families since 1983. Currently, 18,000 children in 23 project locations are receiving assistance, over 120 through ChildFund Ireland sponsors. Since its inception, CCF Zambia has been committed to the provision of education as demonstrated through practical actions undertaken by its projects and reaching over 30,000 children each year.

The country faces a myriad of problems including economic decline and food insecurity. Underlying all of the problems are the far-reaching consequences of widespread poverty and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. As in many developing countries, childbirth places new-borns and mothers at great risk in Zambia. In Zambia, 64 out of 10,000 women die in pregnancy or childbirth. CCF Zambia is addressing this problem with its Safe Motherhood programme. The Safe Motherhood programme ensures access to health care facilities for prenatal visits, emergencies and births. Participants are given vitamin supplements, as are babies and children under the age of five. With additional support from Irish Aid, ChildFund Ireland and CCF Zambia are implementing a safe motherhood programme in Chibomba District, north of the capital Lusaka.
