Message from CEO,

In the twenty-first century, when technology has made the incredible happen and education is a basic human right, 101 million primary school age children do not attend school.  In some countries and regions, the task of delivering universal primary education remains enormous; for example, in sub-Saharan Africa, 46 million primary school age children are out of school, and in South Asia, the number is 35 million.  The role of education in poverty eradication is crucial.

At the turn of the millennium, the world's leaders came together and issued the Millennium Declaration in an effort to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.  They drew up the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and all countries committed to reach the targets. Universal Primary Education is one of the MDGs.  http://www.childinfo.org/

In the Overview to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2010, UN Under-Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs, Sha Zukang, says "Lack of educatrion is another major obstacle to accessing tools that could improve people's lives.  For iinstance, poverty and unequal access to schooling perpetuate high adolescent birth rates, jeopardizing the health of girls and diminishing their opportunities for social and economic advancement."

The developing world is so far behind the richer countries in education, health, sanitation, nutrition etc. that they will need assistance for many years.  But millions of children can't wait years - they need these services right now.  They have a RIGHT to these services right now.  http://www.wfp.org/hunger/stats

With the support of sponsors and donors such as Irish Aid, ChildFund Ireland is working to help communities, families and children to achieve the quality of life that should be theirs as of right.  You can be part of this by sponsoring a child through ChildFund.

Through letters, photos, cards and annual School Reports, you will hear how your sponsored child is progressing and it is great to know that you are changing a child's life.
